Brief info

First Lady Dr. Tya Frelix is a native of Las Vegas, NV. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Spanish at UNLV in 2005. She then continued her educational journey in Nashville, TN, at Trevecca Nazarene University, where she earned her Master's degree in Business and Educational Doctorate in Leadership.

Dr. Tya has expressed her philanthropy and servant leadership through volunteering. Her efforts include serving as a member and previous board chairperson for The Ross Center Foundation. This Tennessee non-profit organization focuses on the mental health needs of underserved communities. She is also a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, and The Links, Incorporated, two organizations whose mission is to bring awareness to the black community's cultural, social, and economic challenges. Additionally, she has served disadvantaged demographics through her headship on voter rights restoration projects, voter registration education, and mental health awareness in the African-American community. Additionally, Dr. Tya has been publicly recognized for her service by her peers and community organizations, namely as a 2019 Nashville Cable Athena YP Award Nominee.

Moving to Flint has reignited Dr. Tya's passion for uplifting the African American community. As first lady, her goals include empowering the community through youth mentoring and narrowing the communication and cultural gap between the African-American and LatinX communities by providing free youth and adult Spanish language education.

First Lady Dr. Tya and her husband, Pastor Brian Frelix, share their passion for marriage ministry. Together, they witness to audiences about their God-centered marriage and provide biblical guidance for couples that encounter marital challenges. Dr. Tya lives by the word of God and knows that God has equipped her to assist her husband in his ministry through her gift of teaching. The scripture that resides in her heart is from Ephesians 4:11-12:

"So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up". (NIV)
