BIRCH RUN, MI — Birch Run police are warning motorists to check their bank accounts for suspicious activity after credit card skimmers were found on gas pumps at a local gas station.
According to a message posted on the police department’s Facebook page, the skimmers were found at the Birch Run 7- Eleven, located at 8620 Main St.
The skimmers were found on pumps one and two and police are urging anyone who used those pumps from Dec. 8 through now and have fund inconsistencies in their bills to call the police department at 989-624-1113.
When a person slides their credit or debit card into a compromised machine, the card skimmer reads the magnetic strip on the card and stores the card number. A person’s PIN can be captured, too, if a fake keypad was placed over the real one. Later, thieves can scoop up the information and either sell it or use it themselves.
